Animation

My Animation

This is a stop motion animation.  I made it by taking lots of pictures and flashing them on the screen for a tenth of a second each.  I used a tripod to make sure that my camera was in the same place for each picture.  Over the course of this project I have learned that lightroom is EVIL!

Beauty

I think that beauty is anything that creates in people.  Beauty does not need to be happy.  In my mind, if something conjures an emotion, it is beautiful.  I think that the photo below (of the tree on the cliff) shows beauty because it helps to bring a sense of peace to the viewer.

Commercial

This picture is commercial.  The Nike logo is impossible to miss.  The photo has no artistic value.

Artistic

This picture is more artistic.  It is not selling anything.  It is instead reveling information about the setting in which the subject lives.

Nature Photography

This is a picture taken by photographer John Shaw.  I think that it illustrates natural beauty.  I did NOT take this picture.

I think that this picture shows natural beauty because of its simplicity.  There is nothing to distract from the subject, the tree.  There are no cars or buildings in view.  The only thing present is the tree.  I like this picture because of the colors.  The blue background goes well with the green tree.

Portraits

Classic
A classic portrait is a picture of a person.

This is a picture of a student in Lincoln.  I like this picture because of the student's facial expression.  I did not edit the photo.  I thought about editing it to bring out the colors more, but I decided that as school is a rather drab location I should leave the colors slightly muted to mirror the setting's true colors.

This is a picture of one of my friends in a parking garage.  I like this picture because of the difference between the right and left sides of the picture.  The darkness and light make the picture very asymmetrical.

Environmental
An environmental portrait is one taken in the subject's environment.  These pictures show something about the subject's personality.

This is a picture of my dog in my backyard.  I arranged my dog's favorite toys around him to show aspects of his personality.  I edited this picture to make the colors darker.  I did this to draw attention to the subject of the picture, my dog.

Editing

Tilt Shift
Tilt shift is a type of photography that simulates a lens with a narrow depth of field.

This is a picture of the Shanghai skyline.  I took this picture over spring break when I was in Shanghai.  I edited this picture to simulate an extremely narrow depth of field.  I like this picture because of how well the tilt-shift effect worked.

Daguerreotype
Daguerreotypes are one of the first types of photography.  They were made on metal plates.  Because of this they became damaged quickly.

This is a picture of a tree in Washington Park.  I edited the picture so that it looks like a daguerreotype.  I like this picture because it appears to be old, but really I took it a few months ago.

Light

Back Lighting

This picture is of a sign downtown.  It employs back lighting because the sign is lit up from behind.  The bright sky in this picture gives it a happy feel.  I like the fact that the top of a limp post is shown in the bottom of the frame.  I think that it gives the photo a sense of height.  Because most people know how tall a lamp post is, they can deduce the height of the sign from the fact that it is above the lamp post.  To edit this photo I increased the luminance of the color blue.

Silhouette

This is a picture of a tree taken from the roof of my house. The sun was setting behind the tree, making the tree a silhouette. I like this picture because of the dark blue color of the sky. I think that the dark color scheme gives the picture a sad tone. I did not edit this photo.

Chiaroscuro
Chiaroscuro is a technique that uses a contrast between light and shadow to create a desired effect.

This is a picture of my face. I took it at night using the auto timer on my camera and 9 flashlights. This photo shows chiaroscuro because of the contrast created between the light on one side of my face and the shadow on the other. I made this photo black and white because one of the flashlights I used cast an orange light on my face. I did not like the orange color, so I made the picture black and white to remove it. The darkness gives the picture a somber tone.

Reflection

This is a picture of a reflection of the sky on a building downtown. I like this picture because of the bright colors. They create a happy mood. To edit this photo I increased the saturation of the color blue.

Shadows

This is a picture of the shadow of a tree on one of the Lincoln portables. I like this picture because of its striped appearance, a stripe of blue, a stripe of red, and a stripe of green. The shadow has a slightly blurred appearance because the tree was blowing in the wind. The bold colors give this picture a happy tone.
